| Braving three hour EasyJet
delays, packed Tube journeys, and sub-tropical temperatures, we headed to
the gig at London’s Garage club. Junction
XIII were the first band on, playing a loud and fast-paced
set to what was still a relatively small crowd. The band were slightly
over-aggressive to the crowd, with the frontman spitting beet at the audience
and jumping offstage at one point.
They raced through songs such as 'Better Than You' and 'Life Is Loud',
and while the vocals were a bit too shouty at times, it was still entertaining
to watch, and the boys punkish tunes and raucous stage performance was
never less than entertaining.
Junction XIII’s set was a great way to kick of the night’s
proceedings, and their music was certainly in keeping with the rest of
the evening’s line-up.
Next on were Lethal
Fixx, who, clad in clothes such as bright pink scarves
and PVC cow-print trousers, were certainly very visually entertaining
to see. Thankfully the music itself was no less fun.
Songs like 'Wild Appetite' and 'Beautiful People' were perfect ‘80’s
influenced rock tunes, with big choruses and typical lyrics about partying
and rock n’ roll.
Singer Jade Lear had a fantastic stage presence and was definitely charismatic-
he and the rest of the band had great onstage chemistry.
I really loved Lethal Fixx’s performance; it was fun, feelgood,
and made me want to dance… I just made sure I avoided the Jaegermeister
that was being poured liberally at the crowd.
Apart from Crystal Pistol, Red
Star Rebels seemed to be the main draw of the night. With
a reputation for hellraising preceding them, the band took to the stage
with singer Blacky swigging from a bottle of port. The crowd seemed to
know every word of every song, with the anthemic 'Fast Die Young (And
Pretty)' getting the best response.
Another stand-out song was 'To Young To Care' - the band were compelling
to watch, and like the previous two bands, were bursting with energy and
attitude.
From performances such as this one, the Red Star Rebels look like they
will either become famous or crash and burn in the most spectacular style.
Canada’s
Crystal Pistol took to the stage
and almost immediately launched into an excellent performance of 'Watch
You Bleed'. The band are extremely dynamic onstage, and seemed to be drenched
in sweat, beer, and God knows what else within minutes.
Vocalist Mik Ireland had a good rapport with the crowd, inviting everyone
onstage for 'All The Freaks'. HMI aren’t really limber enough to
have climbed up there, but needless to say that everyone who joined the
band on the stage seemed to have a ball, and Crystal Pistol themselves
had no problem with fans grabbing them and hogging their microphones.
Two new songs were played, along with several tracks from their debut
album; with 'Line It Up', 'Shake' and of course the brilliant 'Rock Star'
being my favourites. Every song played got fists pumping and people screaming
along.
