Vains of Jenna are another one of a growing crop of Swedish 80’s sleaze-influenced bands, and have played with the likes of Gemini Five and recorded at Gilby Clarke’s RedRum studios. With the oldest being 24 years of age, they make HMI feel a) old, and b) jealous. Why jealous? Well, within a month of their youngest members Jacki Stone (drums) and Nicki Kin (lead guitar) leaving school, they had flown to Hollywood. So no matter what their music is like, you can’t knock their ambition. For a band that has only been together for a year, Baby’s Got A Secret is Vains of Jenna’s third EP. Their first, self-titled EP was excellent and I did wonder if this would be half as good. The title track is catchy as hell with its cry of “Daddy’s little girl is a rock and roll bitch!” I can actually envision myself dancing to this and embarrassing myself greatly. Nothing new there, then. Great guitar solo too- the type of thing air guitar was invented for. Get On The Ride is definitely a grower- I like it more and more every time I hear it. Lizzy DeVine’s raspy, hoarse vocals might not be everyone’s cup of tea- it’s clear he is not the most technically accomplished singer, but I for one don’t care about things like that. If I did, I wouldn’t like Ratt. Personally I think the singing adds a really trashy feel to the songs, which is always good in HMI’s book. I thought One Last Pleasure was the weakest of the bunch, but it’s still a good song so I’m only being picky. And if I was being really picky I would say that perhaps they should have included another original song rather than a cover of the Stones’ Jumpin’ Jack Flash, but maybe that’s just being greedy! While none of the songs quite match up to tunes like ASAD or Heartbreak Suicide which were on the first EP, they still made me wish it was a Saturday night and that I was out dancing to them. That’s probably the highest compliment I can give any band. Baby’s Got A Secret is four songs long,
leading to the question- when on earth is there going to be an album?
