Turbonegro 'Retox' 2007 Scandinavian Leather Records |

| ‘Retox’ is Turbonegro’s
eighth album since they formed in 1989, and the Norwegian band have once
again delivered a full-on rock album that deserves to be played as loud
as possible.
While some fans may yearn for the punkier sound of 1996’s ‘Ass Cobra’, ‘Retox’ is very much in the vein of the ‘Apocalypse Dudes’ trilogy, with a mixture of ‘70’s arena rock, catchy choruses, and slightly comical lyrics. That’s not to say that some of the songs on here don’t have a punkier aspect, because they do. ‘Welcome To The Garbage Dump’ clocks in at just under 2 minutes, and tracks such as ‘We’re Gonna Drop The Atom Bomb’ and ‘Do You Do You Dig Destruction’ definitely hark back to Turbonegro’s older material. While there is perhaps nothing as annoyingly catchy as the ‘Party Animals’ anthem ‘Blow Me Like The Wind,’ ‘Retox’ does have tunes that will stick in your head the first time you hear them, such as the wonderfully titled ‘Everybody Loves A Chubby Dude’ and one of my favourites, ‘Boys From Nowhere.’ ‘I Wanna Come’ slows things down as much as Turbonegro ever slow things down, but is the sole down-tempo moment on the entire album. It’s maybe fair to say that some people
could be put off by Turbonegro’s rather outlandish appearance- after
all, it’s not everyday you see a rock band dressed in sailor suits
(I don’t think the Village People count), but what I would say to
that is- let it go… Turbonegro are loud, fun, and thoroughly entertaining. |
