Towers of London
'Blood, Sweat and Towers'

Firstly, if you hate spides and chavs as much as we do, make sure you have a look at the Towers Of London video on youtube.com in which they give a chav a good kicking. It’s genius.

Anyway, onto the music. This band have mostly been described as the Sex Pistols meets Guns N’ Roses, and this comparison is probably justified, in particular with regard to singer Donny’s Johnny Rotten-esque pronunciation.

Beaujolais, Air Guitar and On A Noose are my favourites on the record. There is even a great (and I suspect, drunken) acoustic version of Fuck It Up included, but it’s the original version that for me, is the stand-out track- definitely one to play as loud as possible.

The band clearly have a knack for writing a 3 minute long punk rock song, but the more classic rock style guitars add something a little extra so it’s never just generic punk. Loud, singalong choruses and cheeky lyrics ensure that the songs are never dull.

King starts off deceptively quietly, before quickly going back to the usual shouty choruses and loud guitars… then ends, bizarrely, with some violins. It’s a weird song to put slap bang in the middle of the album, and perhaps slows the relentless pace down somewhat. Aside from that, the rest of the album is pretty much relentless.

The Towers have a real reputation for drinking, fighting and attitude, which has earnt them criticism from some, but certainly not us. The band are a well-needed antidote to some of the bland and boring drivel that is described as ‘rock’ music these days (yes, Coldplay, Keane and all the rest- I mean YOU), and Blood Sweat And Towers is a must for anyone who is bored of the Chris Martins of this world.
