One
of Canada's hardest working bands return with 'Sleep is the Enemy'. I
hope that this is the album that finally gets Danko Jones the worldwide
adoration that he deserves.
We start of with 'Sticky Situation' a fast paced, bass heavy track that's
typical Danko Jones, but don't think that they have simply recreated 'We
Sweat Blood'.
'Baby hates me' is a guitar heavy track that would be the most reminiscent
of the previous album 'We Sweat Blood', the backing vocals on the chorus
are something different on this album, but it works well.
Throughout the whole album you I get the distinct feeling that the band
are trying to experiment with some different sounds because although the
majority don't stray too far from the typical frantic hard rock sound
that has been associated with the band, there are different elements added
on some of the tracks, for instance, unless I am very much mistaken there
is a very faint piano intro on 'She's drugs'.
Kyuss' John Garcia sings backing vocals on 'Invisible', it's a great track,
hard and heavy Danko Jones, but with some nice variations, such as the
backing vocals, and more of a melody than on previous releases.
Indeed this more melodic (and dare I say radio friendly) style
is evident on quite a few tracks on this album especially 'First Date'
and 'When will I see you'.
'Don't fall in love' and the title track 'Sleep is the Enemy' are two
of the weaker tracks on this release
which results in it not quite matching up to the high standard of 'We
Sweat blood'. 'Don't fall in love' in particular is a bizarre track,
due to the strangely distorted guitar intro and the vocal melody which
is not only uncharacteristic of Danko Jones it is unsuited to his vocals
which have that distinctive hard edge
as that is lost on this song.
Overall this album doesn't have the in-your-face impact
of 'We Sweat Blood' but it is a worthy follow up with some great tracks
and typical testosterone laden lyrics that we have come to expect from
Danko.
8/10
