The Soho Roses

Interviewed By: Kerri

1. How do you feel about the release of the CD?

Andy: Like a dog with two dicks! Bitches in the front, bitches in the back, the back of my Cadillac!!!!!
Paul: Well, it looked at one point like it would never happen. We couldn't find the mastertape of 'The Third And Final Insult' and had just about given up hope. Then Pat stumbled across it amongst a load of crap in his loft, so I supposed 'relieved' is the word...
Pat: Quite frankly I was incontinent with joy. Then I heard the album and I was incontinent all over again.

2. Do you feel that being from the UK restricted your popularity in the 80’s as the glam scene in the 80’s was focused in LA?

Paul: There was actually a glam scene in London in the early eighties that predated the LA one. That was the one we caught the arse-end of. Unfortunately by then that LA nonsense had taken off, so we got mixed up in it by accident. That pissed us off no end. I suppose the only way in which it could have restricted our popularity though was that the UK rock press embraced it so shamelessly, despite the fact that 99% of it was shit, and consequently gave less coverage to UK bands.
Pat: Possibly. The American Majors at the time hated anything punky, so we stood no chance. Unfortunately, the Brit majors were more concerned with Kyle Minogue and Jason Donovan at the time. And the Brit indie’s treated Glam like it was the plague! Therefore, we had to finance and organise the album ourselves. The results speak for themselves…
Andy: No. I feel being work shy and not interested in the American glam scene restricted our popularity. Also not being in America and being a punk band didn’t help.

3. You kind of caught the crest of the wave in the late 80’s. Do you think that this effected the longevity of the band?

Andy: Wasn’t a tsunami though mate! Might have got a half decent belly board ride off it but no great shakes! Afterall, Tigertailz were involved in that ‘scene’. One good reason to distance oneself.
Paul: Yes, but that was because the 'wave' had nothing to do with us. We were appalled by the whole scene in London, which was becoming a bad joke, and consequently stuck our fingers up at it.
Pat: Yeah wasn’t much of a wave. The best part of it was the clubs, the characters around, and the grins to be had. The end of the scene did coincide with us splitting up. We were savvy enough to realise it was over and it had ran its glorious course.

4. Any particular reason to release the CD now?

Andy: Cos we can.
Paul: Full Breach Kicks actually wanted to release it two years ago. They didn't
realise quite how lazy and disorganised we are though, so I'm pleased - and
somewhat surprised - that they stuck with us.
Pat: It's the charge, it's the bolt, it's the buzz, it's the sheer fuck off-ness of it all! Am I right? Actually, no particular reason. Crazy Americans wanted to release it. There were reports of people paying ridiculous money for a bootleg copy of the album, so hopefully this will put a stop to that non-sense.

5. What do you think about the current British glam bands such as the Towers of London, etc?

Andy: Who? Not interested.
Paul: Towers of London are a glam band?! Fuck me, what's the world coming to? To tell the truth though, I've only heard one of their songs, so I'm not really in a position to comment on them musically. I did see the singer make a total
prick of himself on 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' though. Not the sharpest
tool in the kit... The last decent UK glam band I remember seeing was Rachel
Stamp. Are they still going?
Pat: Humm...I don’t think there is a British Glam scene; is there? Fair play to them if there is. Just write some decent songs, that's all I ask. As for Towers of London, they can piss right off!

6. Any sign of a new album with new songs?

Andy: What?????
Paul: From us?!
Pat: If we did, it would be a corker! Just give us the cash and we’ll sort it!

7. What about plans for touring?

Andy: Where?????????
Paul: Well, if someone else is willing to pay we might consider it - I'm not trudging around in the back of a cold Transit again for anyone! Besides, Soho Roses never really toured in the first place, so it would have a certain novelty value.
Pat: Oh, Life on the open road. Hang on, we’ve got to re-form first. If we did, we’d try and do it properly with a massive sound. I can just see it now....

8. Anything else that you would like to add?

Pat: Buy the fookin’ album, you tight bastards! And while you’re at it get the Paramore and Cherry Ghost albums.
Paul: I think I'll leave that to Andy - he likes having the last word...
Andy: A big fat wad to my wallet!
