Hi Dave, thanks
for taking the time to answer our questions. I am midway through the production of the second Big Cock record, tentatively titled “Second Coming”. 14 new songs destined to be classics in the tradition of true American cock rock. Why call your band Big Cock?? Suppose your website gets a lot of hits?? I’ve always wanted to be in a band called Big Cock - I guess I finally found a group of fellow musicians who were as twisted as me. Actually the name can both hinder and help: help in that people tend to listen to songs from a band called Big Cock if they’ve never heard of us, but hinder in that it is difficult to send out emails with “Big Cock” in the header because so many spam filters will just delete the message (so use Big C0ck instead). …and don’t type Big Cock into Google – you may be surprised with what you get back… How does Big Cock differ from any of the other bands you have played with?? Big Cock is unabashed rock & roll that hasn’t made any compromises with regard to musical direction, name, song lyrics, etc. We never really grew up, so what you’re gonna get is songs about girls, booze, fast cars and girls (did I mention that already?). In light of recent music trends (nu-metal, grunge and now emo) do you ever see true hard rock and fucking roll making it back into the mainstream,?? The mainstream is what people make it. The reason you see so much emo, rap, and hip-hop is because, like it or not, that’s what most people want, and they’ve put their money behind it. That’s not what we want, so we formed a band called Big Cock and created an album called “Year of the Cock” (www.bigcockrocks.com – the shameless plug). Trends come and go, but there are always true rock fans – it’s just that at times there are more rock fans than at other times. The music buying public ultimately votes with their wallets, so if you want rock-and-fucking-roll, then support it by going to rock shows and buying rock records. Recording or playing live?? What do you prefer?? I love both. Making records is a truly satisfying endeavour and a way to release all the inner creativity. Playing live, though, is instant gratification, and an appreciative crowd is the best feeling in the world. Who would you say influenced your taste in music growing up and would they still influence your song writing currently?? I think I’ve come full circle. I was raised on early Van Halen (DLR), Deep Purple, Kiss, Montrose, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and AC/DC back in the seventies. Although my professional career was eighties-based with King Kobra, Keel and Lizzy Borden, my music today has more of my early influences than my eighties stuff. When I listen back to the new songs, I hear elements of AC/DC, Kiss and Van Halen. Fuck yeah! What are your favourite songs of the new album?? Bad Motherfucker, King of Cool and Hard to Swallow I really like the King Kobra covers on ‘Year of the Cock’, anything in particular make you include these?? I wrote them and they’ve gone through many changes. Mean Street Machine was actually the very first song I ever wrote, back in high school. An early band here in Arizona we had call the Schoolboys first recorded it on an EP way back in 1980, then the band changed it’s name to Icon and recorded it for their first album on Capitol Records in 1983. I had left the band to relocate to L.A. by then (the song never ended up on the finished Icon record) and recorded the song in 1988 with Carmine Appice on King Kobra III. What new bands (if any) are rocking your world at the minute?? HMI love recommendations?? So many: Avenged Sevenfold brings back real guitar playing again, I like HIM (cool singer), Weezer, Foo Fighters, The Darkness, Linkin Park, Audioslave, Velvet Revolver. All in all, this is a good time for music, just not Billboard Hot 100 music. In a world gone political correctness mad, it’s great to hear some truly dirty sleazy rock n roll songs (eg You suck the love out of me) however some people (probably feminists) feel that the lyrics are a little risqué, what do you have to say to them?? Listen to the 50 Cent record (4 million and counting, I think). I have never heard so much swearing, misogyny, and gun worship in my life and this is at the top of the charts! I will say one thing though; the rap guys are taking chances and making music that parents hate. That’s what rock and roll used to be and isn’t now. It’s all too safe and predictable. I’m hoping Big Cock will piss some parents off – that’s what rock and roll’s all about (although I’m a parent myself and I’m not that pissed-off). And if you think our first record is risqué, wait until you hear the next one! What bands should pack it all in?? Nobody. Any artist that has the balls to keep at it has my admiration and support. Music as either a business or a way of life is difficult – those that don’t quit are the ones that have what it takes and will ultimately succeed. Success isn’t always measured in popularity, though; it’s in the ability of the artist to connect with his/her audience. Finally, anything else you would like to add??? Folks, listen to Big Cock and you’ll hear the message of Rock loud
and clear. Re-live the glory days of rock and roll when it was all about
booze and babes. I’m sick of looking at rock bands today that wear
their old t-shirts on stage and stare at their shoes while singing songs
about how much they hate their lives. Every minute you do that is a minute
you didn’t spend getting buzzed on brew and sticking your hand down
your girlfriend’s pants while making out in her daddy’s Corvette.
That’s where you’ll find me! |
