The name 'Kid Ego' has been synonymous
with the UK sleaze revival over the past year. Their look and sound is
everything that you we at HMI would love to have more of in the current
music scene.
'Ignite the Tide' is a very impressive album, Kid ego go straight for
the throat with all 12 fast paced, hook laden songs and make no bones
about the influence's drawn from the likes of Motley Crue, Aerosmith and
Skid Row.
The title track 'Ignite the Tide' is a great way to kick of the album,
the drums and bass setting down the catchy rhythm just before the twin
guitars from Birdie and Phil join in.
The drumming in 'Lady Coniver' is fantastic and really makes the song
stand out as a pounding hard-rock gem on the album. The backing vocals
stand out too.
Gene Frenkell would be delighted to hear the cowbell make a come back
on songs like the musically catchy but lyrically venomous 'Sweet Bectoria'.
I wasn't too sure about the variation to the acoustic guitars for the
start of 'UFO' but i have to admit that it did grow on me after a few
listens and around the 3 minute mark the song really comes into it's own
and once again we are treated to a superb sound from the guitars, complementing
Zakk's powerful vocals.
'Flirtin' with Suicide' has a slightly heavier sound that the rest of
the album and the guitars are a little over powering on this track.
The final song 'Hellshot' just reminds us before the CD comes to an end
of the guys previously mentioned strong 80's hard rock roots. However,
don't think just because the bands influences are very apparent throughout
the CD that Kid Ego don't have their own style.
For a band that were only formed 2 years ago the band are achieving great
things, for example the 15 date Rock Revolution Tour and of course being
signed to the label. The next step for the guys is of course playing the
mighty Crue Fest in the Whisky-a-go-go. Can the 5 guys from York crack
the US??... of course they can!!!!.
8/10
